Biography

Barkley L. Hendricks was a contemporary American painter, born in 1945 in Philadelphia. His work is remembered today for its revolutionary contributions to Black portraiture and conceptualism: his most well-known work remains to be life-sized painted oil portraits of Black individuals. He is therefore regarded as one of the most influential artists to contribute to the fusion between American realism and postmodernism.

Hendricks died in 2017. His works are now housed in the National Gallery of Art and the Tate in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York City.
