Description
This oil and encaustic on canvas is an exceptional work by Stéphane Braconnier, both for its history and for its symbol.
In 1981 Stéphane Braconnier was still at the Beaux-Arts (he did not graduate until 1983). Through his muse at the time, Clémentine Joya, he met his first collector, Max Chaoul, the Lyon couturier.
Max Chaoul immediately fell for this one, while Clémentine Joya had doubts and preferred two other canvases with cut-out frames.
The cut-out frames were quickly abandoned by the artist in favor of the square format, which he continued throughout his career.
Max Chaoul ultimately chose this “square” canvas, making it the first work by Stéphane Braconnier acquired by a private collector.
He was quickly spotted by Lucien Durand in Paris, who, among other things, made César, César.
Ten years later, it is around this theme of “black” that Pierre Soulages and Stéphane Braconnier come together in the same exhibition, at the Alice Pauli gallery.

Stéphane Braconnier (1958-2015) graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, with the Prix de Paris in 1983 Very quickly spotted by critics and gallery owners in Paris, Stéphane belonged to the generation of artists from the beginning of the 80s, which in France upset the new codes of contemporary art, his works will be shown by Lucien Durand and certain contemporary art museums in France. a stay in New-Yok at this time will determine the direction of his work.
