I create from nostalgia—layering vintage paper and paint to honor memory, emotion, and the fading beauty of books and handwritten words.

Julia Shilo is a mixed-media artist whose work centers on nostalgia, memory, and emotional authenticity. She draws inspiration from childhood impressions and integrates vintage materials—such as fragments of antique books, sheet music, and handwritten letters—into layered compositions.
Working in mixed media, she weaves together fragments, layering them with acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and collage. These materials are not just visual elements, but carriers of meaning—evoking history, time, and human connection. By integrating vintage paper ephemera, she bridges the past and present, embedding her compositions with hidden contrasts and symbolic textures.
Her portraits and figurative pieces balance realism with expressive abstraction, capturing not only external beauty but also inner emotional depth. Relocating to Bulgaria marked a turning point in her artistic vision, opening themes that speak across cultural boundaries. Her work is a tribute to the vanishing tactile world—where books, letters, and handwritten words remain powerful symbols of memory, knowledge, and human presence.
