Description
A contemplative piece, the third of the Cosmic Inquiry series, like its predecessor, consists of two distinct masses in an interplay of subtle tensions ultimately resolving in a harmonious unity. The asymmetrical structural balance of the freestanding form adds another conceptual layer of co-operation to the dyadic form. The title refers to the act of contemplating the mystery of the cosmos, nature and life.
The sculpture is carved with hand tools and smoothed with sand paper—taking fine strokes in the finishing stages, in specific directions according to the grain in that area. The surface is the natural wood. The colour, a yellowish cream can be expected to darken slightly over the years.
As seen in the photos, the piece benefits greatly from multiple lamps (perhaps 3) positioned to the sides at various angles. Such an arrangement casts complex shadows which gives the piece a further sense of cosmic mystery. Experimentation is suggested. Due to the multiple strong viewing angles as well, the piece can be rotated to display different views.

Presentation
Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
