Arch No.52, 2023

Mike Sasaki   Emerging artists

Inspired by stone monuments, Arch No.52 assumes a slight rectilinearity in form pronouncing its megalithic quality. Characteristic of the whole series of Arch forms, the subtle surface curvature and smoothness of number 52 defines the piece. The form, in its apparent simplicity embodies a sensitive essence which emerges from the piece upon contemplative viewing attention. The variegated grain patterns hearken back to their source, the natural plant material, whilst decorating the surface of the form with their penetrating quality. The colour contains mixtures of very pale beiges and greens.

Note the overall wood colour darkens gradually with exposure to sunlight, especially direct sunlight. The lightness of the colour can be preserved greatly by limiting such exposure. Allowing the natural aging process can also be interesting.

Although cracks in the wood blocks are avoided as best as possible, sometimes they are found. Hairline checks near the edges of the back face of this piece (as seen in the photos) were filled and now serve to add to the character and charm of the natural material and the artwork.

The piece is signed on the bottom including the year of creation. It is designed for waist to shoulder level viewing. Experimenting with various lighting and spatial arrangements is encouraged. Dust with a soft cloth and keep a reasonable distance from heat sources.
