Biography
Born in the Philippines in 1931, Ang Kiukok was a visual artist, whose work principally fused influences from the Cubist, Surrealist, and Expressionist movements to depict often violent human imagery. Named as a National Artist of the Visual Arts in 2001, Kiukok specialized in charcoal portraiture and mural paintings which often articulated the artist’s frustrations towards the political hostilities he witnessed in his homeland.
A retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila in 2000, in recognition of Kiukok’s contribution to the nation’s art industry. Following his death in 2005, the artist was buried at the Philippines’ National Cemetery for Heroes.
