This powerful colour screen print is a characteristic example of the late graphic work of Antonio Saura, one of the most influential Spanish artists of the post-war period. The composition is animated by a dense field of abstracted, fragmented forms in intense reds, blues, yellows, and greens set against a deep black background. The work belongs to Saura’s Mutaciones series, in which figures and forms appear to shift and dissolve, hovering between figuration and abstraction.
The screen print is hand-signed in pencil “SAURA” at the lower right and numbered in pencil at the lower left. It is printed on Fabriano Vélin paper bearing the watermark and was published by COOB’92, Barcelona. The work is fully documented in the catalogue raisonné by Cramer, number 560. Sheet size approx. 76 x 56 cm
Antonio Saura (1930–1998) was a founding member of the Spanish avant-garde group El Paso and a key figure in European Art Informel. Closely associated with post-war expressionism, his work explored themes of identity, violence, and existential anxiety through bold, gestural abstraction. Saura’s paintings and prints are held in major international museum collections, including the Museo Reina Sofía, Tate, and Centre Pompidou, and his graphic works are highly regarded for their intensity, innovation, and historical significance.
Authenticity and provenance guaranteed. Delivered with a certificate of authenticity. Worldwide shipping, tax-friendly to the USA and EU countries.
Custom handmade framing available on request.
Antonio Saura is a Spanish painter and writer born in 1930.
He began painting very early, in 1947, during his convalescence after battling tuberculosis. This illness kept him immobile for more than five years. Antonio Saura then began an artistic career in Madrid, and from 1953 onwards he made long and repeated stays in Paris.
Initially attracted to surreaism , Antonio eventually turned to what is known as Baroque Abstraction, a major characteristic of the Spanish group that was then forming El Paso, of which he was one of the founding members. A similar change occurred in his use of color, the very expressive colors of the early canvases giving way to monochrome gray tones with the maturity of his work.
Antonio Saura also designed stage sets for numerous plays, such as "La Casa de Bernarda Alba" in 1963, as well as for an opera, directed by his brother, "Carmen".
Antonio Saura died in 1998 in the city of Cuenca.
