Fantax is a French comic strip created in 1946 by writer Marcel Navarro (under the pseudonym Jean Niagara) and drawn by Pierre Mouchot (Chott). The hero, Fantax—whose real name is Lord Horace Neighbour—is a masked vigilante reminiscent of American superheroes like Batman or The Phantom. He fights crime around the world, often in adventure and espionage stories full of action, mystery, and charm.
However, Fantax quickly became controversial: deemed too violent, too sensual, and too American-inspired, the series was heavily censored in the late 1940s. French authorities, concerned about the influence of American comics, saw Fantax as a symbol of the "moral corruption" of youth. In 1949, the series was finally banned, leading to the character's demise. A second artist, Robert Rocca, known as "Bob Roc," later took over the character.
Despite its abrupt end, Fantax marked a turning point in the history of French comics. It introduced the concept of the French superhero, foreshadowing more modern masked vigilantes and paving the way for a more adult, dynamic, and cinematic style of comics. Its very censorship had a paradoxically foundational effect: it helped define the moral and aesthetic boundaries that French authors would subsequently seek to push in the following decades.
Presentation
Robert Rocca, signing Bob Roc, was part of the famous Chott workshop, directed by Pierre Mouchot, which produced legendary series such as Fantax, Big Bill the Breaker, Marco Polo and Robin Hood. Rocca, in his eighties, is still an artist in Hérault. An accomplished sculptor and recognized artist, Robert Rocca had an artistic journey that began with Fantax and Pierre Mouchot, then other comic book publishers, then he left everything one evening, on a whim, taking a truck that took him to Grenoble. There, he was an illustrator for the Dauphiné Libéré for 27 years and, in the evenings after his working hours, he tried his hand at sculpture, a discipline in which he was able to fully realize himself.
