Robert Saller's Osama (2009) belongs to his acclaimed Bad Beautiful series, where he investigates the contradictions between childhood innocence and the making of cultural and political monsters. Executed in his characteristic stencil-based acrylic technique, the painting depicts a boyish Osama bin Laden – smiling, seemingly carefree, and wearing the universally recognisable “I ♥ NY" T-shirt. In the upper corner, the words “أنا Ø£Øبك" (“I love you") appear in Arabic, creating a charged interplay of tenderness and irony.
The Bad Beautiful series takes as its starting point the way childhood portraits are often commercialised and idealised. Parents commission smiling likenesses of their children, advertisements use youthful faces to sell products, and entire cultures promote the innocence of childhood as a universal good. But Saller flips this logic: what happens when the child portrayed grows up to become one of history's most infamous figures? Osama forces the viewer to hold two irreconcilable realities in mind – innocence and atrocity, sentimentality and violence.
Through this stark and unsettling juxtaposition, Saller reveals how society's tendency to sanitise and idolise childhood imagery collides with history's darker truths. For collectors, Osama represents not just a bold visual statement but also a deeply thought-provoking exploration of propaganda, iconography, and the fragility of innocence.

Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
