Description
In Desktop Boy (WIN) (2008), Robert Saller imagines a child seated inside a digital forest – an image that replaces the outdoors with a computer-generated background. Both playful and disquieting, the painting reflects on the paradox of growing up in an age where virtual landscapes feel more present than nature itself.
The boy, rendered in acrylic with stencil precision, sits atop a plaid that grounds him in homely comfort, yet his surroundings betray their origin: a flat, printed surface recalling the endless wallpapers of a desktop screen. Saller's blend of digital print and hand-painted figure heightens this tension, turning the work into a philosophical commentary on technology, memory, and the fragility of innocence.
Presentation
Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
