Description
The Beast Within by Zakhar Shevchuk presents a striking and expressive interpretation of a tiger, rendered through bold lines and a deliberately simplified form. Rather than focusing on realism, the artist reduces the animal to its essential structure, allowing it to function as a powerful visual symbol set against a dynamic, semi-abstract background.
The composition is energized by expressive brushstrokes, layered textures, and fluid gestures that create a sense of movement throughout the surface. The interplay of strong black contours with vibrant, contrasting colors gives the painting a distinctive presence, while the raw, almost instinctive execution recalls the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the symbolic language of A.R. Penck. At the same time, the use of the animal as an emotional carrier connects the work to the tradition of Franz Marc.
Beyond its visual impact, The Beast Within resonates on a conceptual level. The tiger becomes a metaphor for inner instinct – suggesting strength, tension, and the underlying forces that shape human behavior. This balance between expressive energy and symbolic meaning makes the painting a compelling choice for collectors seeking contemporary art with both character and depth.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
