Description
Robert Saller's “Lizhnyk" (Acrylic on Canvas, 120 × 120 cm, 2009) belongs to the artist's Carpathian Album project, a series that reinvents Carpathian imagery as imagined record covers.
In this work, the figure of a skier appears beneath bold zig-zag stripes whose geometry recalls both mountain ridges and the textile patterns of a traditional ліжник. The double meaning of the title – лижник as skier, ліжник as blanket – is enhanced by the word “MOHO" in the corner, simultaneously suggesting a mono ski and the mono sound of classic LPs.
Executed with Saller's roller-and-stencil method, the painting reflects a printmaking sensibility and plays with Pop Art visual language. At once humorous and precise, Lizhnyk captures the artist's ongoing dialogue between regional culture, contemporary aesthetics, and the imaginative potential of visual wordplay.
Presentation
Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
