Presentation

Born in 1973, Durga Bai is one of the major artists of Jangarh Kalam in India. Her brother in law, Jangarh Shyam, noticed her talent as a painter of digna (ephemeral and ritual paintings made by the women in front of the houses).

Having a taste for narration, Durga Bai illustrates the stories of the Gond pantheon. Well-defined colors and style accompany these episodes. She also illustrated the book Bhimayana (Anand editions - 2012) which traces the life of Ambedkar, an architect of the Indian constitution and herald of the outcast, category in which tribal artists are classified.

Her qualities as an illustrator of tales prompt regular solicitation from the publishing houses and public commissions. Durga Bai has won numerous awards including "The National Award" and her works are exhibited in museums and galleries both in India and abroad.
