Tobias Harrison

United Kingdom Born in: 1950

“I have worked as an artist all my life. I spent 30 years making ceramics, not wishing to directly follow in the footsteps of my parents who were professional painters. At the age of 50, I was ready for the painting challenge.

I take a direct approach to painting, trying to show what I imagine or see as clearly as possible.

I'm not sure how to categorize my figurative work, allegorical surrealism is as close as it gets. I do not try to give answers but I ask the viewer to have his own interpretation. I am particularly interested in ideas of beauty and its opposite, as well as their effect on self-image.

Why are my numbers bare? It's our most basic, unadorned self with things that have cultural or time references. As with my painting of still lifes, the backgrounds of my characters are semi-abstract. I want to give an idea of the space, not describe it in detail, in order to concentrate on the subject.

I paint directly from life in natural light. This gives the opportunity to continue to take a fresh look at the subject. "- Tobias Harrison
