Rich in colour and richly textured abstract painting by contemporary Dutch artist Moniqe Leliefeld.

Verbonden is Dutch for Connected. Two parallel bronze strips connect in the lower half of the painting. In the upper half, the two parallel pieces do not touch. The right strip is broken from its top half, just above its connection with its left side. The right side seems to grow towards the left side, but the left side has shrunk back, otherwise, the would-be connected at the top as well.

The bronze strips are painted on a rich ochre background and the whole abstract painting is framed with a bronze painted wooden frame.

Verbonden can be a visual allegory for a relationship. Where the two strips are each an individual interacting with the other while living parallel lives. Sometimes connected, sometimes breaking and sometimes healing or sometimes shying away. Usually, one describes a painting from top to bottom, from left to right. However, one does not similarly read a painting. The connection of the two parallel pieces can either be at the beginning of the end of their interaction. I like to think that this piece can either tell a love story or the bitter pain of a long relationship where there is no connection to be made as the one shies away from the attempts of the other parallel piece.

At the end of the day, this is an abstract piece in warm earthly tones with enriched gold and bronze parts. It is a warm and rich painting.

Monique Leliefeld

Netherlands Born in: 1950

Monique Leliefeld is a Dutch painter of emotion. Her figurative technique is excellent and she uses her precise style to capture fleeting emotions inside abstract paintings. Truly evoking emotions from the viewer with her work.

Leliefeld works and reworks her work until an essence of emotion are distilled into her forms. Standing in front of her work immediately twangs an emotion in the viewer. Her joie de vivre series evokes an immediate sense of happiness. The emotion in Mysterious Power is not a raw or wild, but subdued strength. Her technique masterfully works in texture and different stratification in all her work.
