Blanco Y Negro

Antes de la aparición de la fotografía y a excepción de algunos grabados o litografías, todas las imágenes que han llegado hasta nosotros son en color. De hecho, a nadie se le habría ocurrido pintar en blanco y negro, ya que se sabía cómo hacerlo en color. Hoy en día todavía, muchos fotógrafos optan por trabajar en blanco y negro, como Pauline Théon, Kadir Von Lohuizen o Jon Lowenstein, a pesar de que sus fotos son tomadas en color por la cámara, por no hablar de la vuelta a las fotos plateadas, ¿efecto de moda o back to basics? Por lo tanto, el blanco y negro tiene algo que la fotografía en color, a pesar de las recientes innovaciones y de la calidad de las imágenes actuales, no conseguirá quitarle. De hecho, las fotografías en blanco y negro dan una fuerza adicional a las composiciones: los contrastes, las sombras, las formas destacan más; y es cierto que la emoción es diferente ante una fotografía en blanco y negro. El color actúa como una especie de distracción, de perturbación: el color es molesto. Sin embargo, algunos fotógrafos lo prefieren al blanco y negro, otros incluso mezclan color y monocromo. Pero todo el mundo está de acuerdo en este punto: el blanco y negro, al igual que el color, impone una determinada postura del ojo desde el momento en que se hace la foto, durante la misma y en el trabajo posterior, cuando hay que revelar o retocar la foto. Se trata, pues, de un enfoque propio, de dos formas diferentes de ver el mundo y de darlo a ver. La pregunta es: ¿qué se cuenta y por qué se cuenta así? El valor simbólico del blanco y el negro cuando se combinan es una buena forma de reflexionar sobre la fascinación que aún hoy producen. El negro, el "color" de la oscuridad y del carbón quemado por el exceso de luz, considerado como un no-color, al lado del blanco, la luz y el resultado de la fusión entre ellos de todos los colores: no puede haber ambivalencia más fascinante, más sorprendente. El problema es que el blanco y negro sigue estando muy asociado a una época pasada, antes de la popularización del color y su recuperación masiva, sobre todo por parte de la prensa y el fotoperiodismo.
