Presentación
Maria Ya is a contemporary Russian artist whose practice bridges painting and design. Trained as a molecular biologist and educated in landscape design, she turned to contemporary art and abstraction and in recent years developed a distinctive signature technique. Rejecting photorealism and strict line work, Yakovtseva abandoned traditional brushes in favor of palette knives and construction spatulas. Working with thick, layered strokes, she builds textured compositions in which depth and relief confer meaning to each element. Her process is intuitive and experimental: she does not work from preparatory sketches, allowing each piece to evolve organically in the studio. She regularly exhibits regionally and internationally, has been a finalist and award-winner in several competitions, and her works are held in private collections and in the collection of a regional art museum.
Artist statement
My work is rooted in close observation of the natural world. Trained as a molecular biologist and a landscape designer, I translate the astonishing micro-world I study through microscopy onto canvas. Examining butterfly wings taught me that vulnerability and strength can coexist: millions of microscopic scales enable journeys of hundreds of kilometres, yet a single careless touch can bring a wing to the ground. This paradoxical resilience is central to my practice. Working between painting and design, I abandon brushes in favour of palette knives and construction spatulas; built-up relief and subtle luminous overlays mimic wing structure and invite viewers to rediscover the familiar. I draw on microscopic imagery to reveal the quiet architectures of a world that usually remains unseen.
