Biographie
Joseph Kurhajec est né en 1938 à la frontière canadienne, dans le Winconsin, de parents originaires de Tchécoslovaquie.
Il passe sa jeunesse dans le ranch familial où l'on élève des visons. Très vite il s'amuse à assembler tous types de matériaux. À l'université, il étudie l'art, la sculpture sur métal dans un premier temps. Au cours de sa formation, il est profondément impressionné par des fétiches en provenance du Congo, exposés à Chicago en 1961. Ces objets décideront de son orientation artistique. Il gardera toujours, presque instinctivement, et comme gravée dans son ADN, la volonté de créer des œuvres fortes et « chargées ».
