Biography

Mylène Mai first explored the material through sculpture, in search of the evocation of movement by producing the “Madames” series. Quickly, the pleasure of combining materials, creating asperities, textures, the desire to paint and skate the reliefs obtained took precedence over the figurative. Today she works to “unroll the envelope” of her sculptures by creating paintings in which she sculpts the material on the canvas. Mylène Mai tries to make the material precious by evoking those worked by the hand of Man, nature or time, without seeking imitation but rather evocation. She often creates from my sensory memories: the shine and the patina of metals, the roughness of the stone, the charcoal which crumbles, the erosion of the rock, the cracking and the veins of the wood ... Sometimes by working the material finely in the manner of a jeweler, like ancestral artisanal knowledge. Always with the intention of creating a work that leads the visitor to marvel at the simplest things.
