It was in the South-Eastern town of Slovenia, Novo Mesto that Uroš Abram the photographer was born, in 1982. After studying photography and design for two years in Ljubljana, he moved to Prague and joined the FAMU (Film TV School of the academy of performing arts) and obtained his diploma in 2010.
Mainly influenced by the writings of the semiologist Roland Barthes, Uroš Abram absorbed his thoughts and translated them in his work. The theory of photography and medias become his creative driving force. What are the limits, the possibilities and specifics of the digital media? The photographer simulates many questions.
In his "Made in Me" series, the artist addresses the question of his own "camera obscura", while referring to Roland Barthes, which originates in the literal sense, in his mind and remains in his mouth. An unlikely process which justifies the expression that the artist likes to claim "this series is realized by me entirely".
By this operation, Uroš Abram tries to defend the idea that creativity in photography doesn't rely on equipment or on the quality of the latter. It depends on the person's mentor, who asserts that creativity is born through the spirit and not the camera. A formula which is like a mantra for the artist and his work.
Dark shades, forms that emerge like an ectoplasm, the "Made in Me" series is disturbing and intriguing. The technique of the portrait for his photos are like a pattern to question identities, a second concern for the artist.
All in all, Uroš Abram needs to use his camera. Digital and film take turns, in order to capture those instances that attract the media.
Today, Uroš Abram has managed to find his place as a new photographer. He was discovered and exhibited during the Circulation Festival, dedicated to young European Photography.
