Description
Permeable Existence No.7 is carved from a single block of Western Red Cedar. The inspiration for the form arose from contemplation on the transience of matter. The piece is a symbiotic one, where constituent parts are shared between other connected parts. For example, the lower body seems to include two parts (front and rear)–merged and sharing their top surfaces. And all of this interconnected visual movement is circling around the centre opening—that internal metaphysical space to which the title refers.
After 3 years of air-drying, the large block of Western Red Cedar was ready to carve. Starting from a non-rectangular piece of lumber was challenging in regards to fastening it to the bench while working, but after some splitting with a large drawknife, some flatter surfaces were attained for clampability. After the contours were established roughly based on the drawing, I began carving out the inner opening. The care and alertness required in not cutting away too much material, combined with the task of mentally visualizing the form in the round, generally makes for an invigorating sculpting experience. Only after the piece became more and more refined did I finally truly understand what exact form the large log would take.
The sculpture was carved using hand tools like a mallet and gouge, chisels, saws, rasps, files and finally sandpaper. The smooth Western Red Cedar surface is waxed with a beeswax and mineral oil mixture, which deepened and enriched the colours and contrast of the wood.

The piece is signed on the bottom including the year of creation. A personalized booklet with the above description and other relevant information is included. It works nicely with any viewing height and a wide variety of lighting arrangements. Right side light seems to present the form and shadows particularly well. Avoid fingernail scratches. Dust with a soft cloth and keep a reasonable distance from heat sources. Ships in a well protected box.
Presentation
Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
