Presentation

César Baldaccini, widely recognized as César, was a pioneering French sculptor and a central figure in the New Realism movement. Born in Marseille in 1921, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille from 1935 to 1939 before continuing his education at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1943 to 1947. During his formative years in Paris, he was deeply influenced by interactions with modern art giants such as Pablo Picasso, Germaine Richier, and Alberto Giacometti. Initially working with traditional materials like iron and gypsum, César soon developed a groundbreaking approach to sculpture that would define his career.

In 1956, he revolutionized his practice by welding discarded metal scraps into bold figurative and abstract compositions, an innovation that marked his shift toward industrial materials. By 1960, he launched his famous "Compressions dirigées" series, in which he crushed car bodies and industrial objects into condensed sculptures, challenging traditional notions of form and materiality. His exploration of volume and destruction paralleled the spirit of New Realism, a movement that sought to integrate everyday objects into artistic expression. Later, inspired by Pop Art, César expanded his practice to include vibrant, oversized plastic sculptures that playfully reinterpreted consumer culture. His ability to merge industrial processes with artistic vision made him one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century.

Although César passed away on June 12, 1998, his artistic legacy remains stronger than ever. His sculptures continue to attract collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide, with his Compressions and Expansion series frequently featured in major exhibitions. In recent years, his work has been the focus of retrospectives at institutions such as the Centre Pompidou and the Fondation Cartier, reaffirming his enduring impact on contemporary sculpture. The annual César Awards, named in his honor, also serve as a testament to his influence beyond the art world, celebrating excellence in French cinema. As interest in New Realism continues to grow, César's bold and experimental approach to sculpture remains a vital reference point for artists exploring materiality, transformation, and conceptual art.
