Presentation

Graciella Gallardo favors the use of the spatula with acrylic paint on canvas for her work. Her precise yet spontaneous use of the medium allows her to craft figures from textured impastos, taking advantage of the interaction between canvas and paint, freely crafting with the spatula the underlying figure, and at times blending figure with background. In some pieces, she favors the use of a narrow chromatic spectrum, which highlights her ease at marrying texture and figure.

Her themes are varied, many of her works reflect the subtleties of the feminine nature or the nurturance, sweetness, and sensitivity of the motherhood experience. Themes which clearly emanate from her own personal experiences and sensitivities towards what it means to grow as a female in the context of a Bolivian society that is rapidly evolving, attempting to break its traditional stereotypes towards females and gender, while struggling to maintain its cultural roots.

Gallardo studied art at the Superior Institute of Fine Arts in Oruro, Bolivia, she also holds a degree in accounting. She has presented her works at multiple collective and individual shows in galleries and exhibition halls in Bolivia, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Italy, and the United States.
