Hilda Soyer

France

Biography

Hilda Soyer is a French sculptor who was born in Holland. Influenced by her mother and her grandmother, artists themselves, art seemed like an obvious choice. After her photography studies, she focused on sculpture, which she learned at the “Terres de feu” workshop.

She then began to learn the Japanese technique of raku, which she included in her work. In the first stage of this technique, pieces are created and sculpted before being fired in a traditional kiln for the initial time. The second stage involves choosing the colours, oxides and enamel before the pieces are fired for a second time; the shock of the heat causes the enamel to crack. They are then locked away to stimulate certain colours. The artist then sprays the piece with water, cleaning off the soot to reveal the final colours.

Sculpting enables the artist to bring her imaginary world to life, with its poetic, humorous and tender feeling. She creates touching, intriguing and dream-like figures, exhibited across France.
