Biography

Jean Signovert (1919-1981) is a French painter and engraver. He has studied at Saint-Etienne Beaux-Arts in 1943.

Roger Chastel, his friend introduced him to Aimé Maeght which allowed him to exhibit permanently at Maeght's gallery.

Master in drawing and engraving, he met well-know artists such as Georges Braque, Jacques Villon, Henri Laurens, Alberto Giacometti, Nicolas de Staël, Alexander Calder, Roger Bissière, Jean Arp but also famous writers (Francis Ponge, Pierre Reverdy, René Char...).

He was an actif member of the Les mains éblouies, anvant-garde group uniting famous artists Pierre Dmitrienko, Bernard Quentin, Serge Rezvani, Robert Baudinière, Raymond Mason et Jacques Lanzmann) at Maeght's gallery and editing the magazine " Derrière le miroir".

In the same time, Signovert kept engraving for artists such as Georges Braque, Jean Arp, Maurice Estève, Serge Poliakoff et Olivier Debré.

In 1980, he was named as teacher at Ecole nationale supérieure des Baux-Arts but he died before to start.
