Baroque Interior

Standing in contrast to the ambient minimalism of Scandinavian decoration and industrial style, Baroque decoration is based on abundance, ostentation and a taste for details.

The term baroque comes from the Portuguese "barroco", meaning irregularly shaped stone, and developed in Rome and Florence in the 15th century. The Baroque spreads across all artistic fields (sculpture, painting, architecture and especially decorative arts), its precursor being the master painter Michelangelo.

Originally reserved only for the wealthy and used to display their wealth, the industrial revolution allowed the spread of this glamorous and dramatic style.

Today, the principle of baroque decoration is based on opposites. You can play with materials and colors to create depth. Moldings are also a characteristic of the baroque style.

The palette of colors used is therefore very broad but it has some essentials, namely warm and deep colors. Bright red, purple, flashy pink, purple and black are often used. On the other hand, to break the stifling effect of these shades, we like to add very bright touches, gold or silver.

Similarly, concerning the materials, prioritize contrasts and do not hesitate to layer lace, muslin, silk and the velvet that brings a soft side to the general atmosphere of the room.

It is often wrongly understood that the baroque must remain in the bedroom, limited to an original headboard, linen with refined fabric and an armchair Louis XV style. This is absolutely not the case! The baroque style can invade the whole house from the living room to the bathroom through the entrance. There is of course a multitude of supports and objects which it can be expressed through (cushions, lampshades,  tablecloths...).

Baroque interior design is so rich that it is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for designers around the world. After having revisited its furniture in a more or less rock'n'roll and offbeat way (medallion chair, baroque lamp, wooden chest of drawers...), designers are now having fun imagining all sorts of patterns representative of this extravagant style.

However, be careful not to try to do too much at the risk of falling into kitsch. To avoid this pitfall, bring in the baroque with beautiful pieces such as a chandelier with pendants, a large baroque mirror and some artworks for example.

To get an elegant baroque decor, we like to opt for a contemporary painting taking up the key color code of the style: pink, black, silver... A framed painting with worked ornaments and gilding also fits in well. The general idea is to alternate contemporary or modern and classic style. Why not also choose an original adaptation of a period portrait like the brilliant Pierre et Gilles?
