The exhibition “From Word to Flesh” presents a selection of works from Marie-Amélie Chéreau’s series “The Incarnates.”
With “The Incarnates,” Marie-Amélie Chéreau develops a body of work centered on the question of incarnation. The series explores the passage from word to matter, from inscription to presence, through a structured arrangement primarily of diptychs and triptychs. Each set stages a transformation. The first panel reveals the sign: written traces, graphic marks, and vibratory languages appear on the surface of the canvas. Then, as the sequence unfolds, the paint accumulates. The color thickens. The material gradually covers the word, not to erase it, but to embody it. The pictorial surface then becomes a place where the invisible is no longer opposed to the visible, but fulfilled through it.
“From Word to Flesh” explores this mystery. How does the invisible take on a physical form? How does the word leave the realm of abstraction to become a lived experience? These works do not illustrate an idea. They offer the viewer an experience of a process. They present the viewer with an encounter with a transformation rather than a narrative. Through this slow passage from sign to substance, Chéreau invites us to experience a presence. A presence that cannot be deciphered, but is felt.
