Lives and works between Brussels and St Nazaire.
Nina De Angelis is a multidisciplinary artist.
She chooses India ink and movement as her primary materials. India ink is the medium best suited to writing about time. Movement, for its part, is both the subject and the main tool of creation. The aim of her work is to observe the particular rhythm of the world and nature, in order to extract it, observe it, and translate it into her abstract language. Sometimes, she takes painting towards performance to develop the dance that the brush teaches her. At other times, she turns to installation to allow the gesture to be nourished by the scope it needs. How can one glimpse the rhythm of time? How can one translate it onto the space of the blank sheet of paper? How can one capture the vibrations of the world around her? Inspired by Rothko and his mystical relationship to art, Nina De Angelis attempts to elucidate the mysteries of the universe through poetic and pictorial experiments.
Her painterly gestures then become a dance, a wordless mantra that speaks of the act of painting. She invents repertoires of gestures, records of impulses, alphabets of abstract languages. For the artist, painting is revealing the surface of movement. Poetic writing accompanies painting and its practice, sharpens her everyday gaze, and gives impetus to her brushstrokes.
"Drawing is a game whose rules are invented as the gesture unfolds."
