Georges Madison

1965: Born on February 8, 1965 in Douala (Cameroon)

1981: Settles in France. Training at the École des Beaux-arts in Le Mans (Plastic initiation certificate in 1986) then at the Institute of visual arts in Orléans (National arts and techniques diploma, graphic art option in 1989).

From 1985: Beginning of the series entitled “Letters to the oppressed”. On various supports, the painter's work refers to pictorial currents from the USA (gestural abstraction by Pollock or De Kooning) or those present in Europe (lyrical abstraction by Soulages or Hartung). Share with these painters a practice of painting as a physical confrontation between the painter and the medium.

From 1994-1995: Beginning of the “Métissages de couleurs”. Georges' artistic quest tells his personal story: born in Cameroon, he followed his schooling, his personal and artistic training in France. His research is marked by this dual belonging to African and Western cultures. How can we build on these two cultures? The compositions bring together two colorful worlds to make them dialogue with each other.

From 1995: pursues his artistic career and his teaching activity in Sarthe.

Teaches successively at the Association de Formation aux Professions Industrielles du Mans (professor of applied arts), at the Musée de Tessé in Le Mans (animator of plastic arts workshops), in Fillé-sur-Sarthe, at the Cochereaux center in Le Mans, in CFI de Champagné (computerized creation of logos) and at the Allonnes Plastic Arts Workshops (painting workshop leader).

In 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001: organizes trips to New York for AFPI du Mans students. Discovery of contemporary New York painting in institutional places (MOMA, Guggenheim Museum) but also in the galleries of Soho and Chelsea. The painter's gaze is more particularly drawn to the work of American artists such as Kelly Ellsworth or Barnet Newman.

2001: First installations. The omnipresent “mixing of colors” in the painter's work is presented in new ways in installations presented at the Municipal Theater of Le Mans (72).

2012: Residency in the workshops of the City of Le Mans. Elaboration of monumental canvases which will be presented at the Collegiate Church of Saint Pierre-la-Cour in 2015. Appearance of a new writing in the “Rain paintings”.

2014: Retrospective of works from 1985 to 2014, town hall of Allonnes (72).

2015: Personal exhibition “Between two worlds ...” at the Collegiate Church of Saint Pierre-la-Cour, Le Mans (72). Edition of a catalog.

2017: “Couleur INFINI” exhibition at the Château de Tours (37). Retrospective of works from 1985 to 2017.

2018: Residency in March and April in Meurcé (72).
