Georges Spiro

Georges SPIRO was born on August 10, 1909 in Warsaw, Poland and died in 1994 in Nice.

He is a Franco-Polish designer, painter and illustrator touched by surrealism. From an early age, Georges Spiro stood out for his talents as a draftsman and artist.

Arrives in Nice, France in 1942, where he begins to collaborate with a furniture manufacturer in the creation of articulated toys. In his spare time, he paints gouaches.

At the end of WW II, Spiro joined the French army and later became a French citizen.

In 1946, separated from all his relatives (his wife had died in a concentration camp and his mother died in Besançon), Spiro tried to find his brother who had taken refuge in England.

He manages to exhibit ten of his works in London, where he sells almost everything and decides to become a full-time painter.

In 1948, Spiro exhibited for the first time in France where he received the "Young Artist Award" and since then his exhibitions have varied from Paris, where he obtained very good reviews, to Bern and Cannes where he was launched by a well-known film . star.

A year later, he is already exhibiting in the USA where an art gallery in New York will represent him for many years.

Spiro's surreal images were painted with realistic detail and techniques. His palette seduces us. Each isolated tone, each nuance of a color speaks an unambiguous personal language. Even when Spiro paints the incomprehensible, he retains us by the luminosity and range of his colors.

Some of these works must be seen as pure symbols of our world torn apart most often with a dash of irony and piercing humour, exposing an impression of a terrible loneliness from all that is human.

Self-taught, Spiro devoted himself wholeheartedly to the tendencies of the school that art critics today describe as "surrealism".

His works are represented in some of the most important art museums in the world.
