Description

Born in Warsaw on 10 August 1909, Georges Spiro grew up in Vienna, where he studied decorative architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule and trained as a cabinetmaker. He later turned to journalism and literature, founding the avant-garde review Das Silberboot (The Silver Boat).

Arrested by the Gestapo following the Anschluss in 1938, Spiro escaped to France and enlisted in the French Army. After his demobilisation, he worked in various trades before settling in Nice in 1942, where he continued to draw and joined the Resistance. The loss of several family members during the war had a lasting influence on his artistic development.

Spiro began exhibiting his paintings in the immediate post-war period. His work, distinguished by precise draughtsmanship, smooth surfaces and carefully constructed perspectives, soon attracted critical attention. In 1948, he received the Prix Drouant-David. His paintings were subsequently exhibited across Europe and in the United States.

Although often associated with Surrealism, Spiro developed a distinctive form of imaginary realism. His compositions combine human figures, architecture, vegetation and abstract forms within meticulously constructed, often impossible landscapes. They reflect affinities with Bosch, Bruegel, Magritte, Tanguy and Dalí, as well as the influence of his architectural training.

A prominent artistic figure on the Côte d'Azur for more than forty years, Spiro was supported by Dor de La Souchère, curator of the Musée Grimaldi in Antibes, and admired by Jean Cocteau, who described his style as “unreal realism." His paintings are characterised by vivid colour, subtle eroticism and a recurring tension between visual precision and imaginative transformation.

Presentation

Georges SPIRO was born on August 10, 1909 in Warsaw, Poland and died in 1994 in Nice.

He is a Franco-Polish designer, painter and illustrator touched by surrealism. From an early age, Georges Spiro stood out for his talents as a draftsman and artist.

Arrives in Nice, France in 1942, where he begins to collaborate with a furniture manufacturer in the creation of articulated toys. In his spare time, he paints gouaches.

At the end of WW II, Spiro joined the French army and later became a French citizen.

In 1946, separated from all his relatives (his wife had died in a concentration camp and his mother died in Besançon), Spiro tried to find his brother who had taken refuge in England.

He manages to exhibit ten of his works in London, where he sells almost everything and decides to become a full-time painter.

In 1948, Spiro exhibited for the first time in France where he received the "Young Artist Award" and since then his exhibitions have varied from Paris, where he obtained very good reviews, to Bern and Cannes where he was launched by a well-known film . star.

A year later, he is already exhibiting in the USA where an art gallery in New York will represent him for many years.

Spiro's surreal images were painted with realistic detail and techniques. His palette seduces us. Each isolated tone, each nuance of a color speaks an unambiguous personal language. Even when Spiro paints the incomprehensible, he retains us by the luminosity and range of his colors.

Some of these works must be seen as pure symbols of our world torn apart most often with a dash of irony and piercing humour, exposing an impression of a terrible loneliness from all that is human.

Self-taught, Spiro devoted himself wholeheartedly to the tendencies of the school that art critics today describe as "surrealism".

His works are represented in some of the most important art museums in the world.
