Biography

Ronan Martin is a French contemporary artist born in 1966, recognized for his singular work at the intersection of abstract painting, contemporary sculpture, and research into material. His work is inscribed in the legacy of minimalism and Bauhaus, from which he takes the founding principle of "Less is More," by favoring streamlined compositions where color, texture, and light become the main vectors of expression. Through an demanding artistic approach, he develops a plastic language where each work goes beyond simple representation to become a space for reflection on major contemporary issues, notably environmental questions, the depletion of natural resources, the preservation of the oceans, and man's place in his environment.

For several years, Ronan Martin has focused his research on a particularly complex technique based on sgraffito, a process consisting of revealing the material by scratching. His creations are developed through the superposition of multiple layers of resins, pigments, glazes, and colors, whose properties of transparency and depth play an essential role in the construction of the image. Each layer is carefully prepared before being incised with different tools, progressively bringing forth shapes, lines, and chromatic variations. This irreversible process gives each of his works an almost archaeological dimension, where light seems to emerge directly from the material. The artist describes this practice as a way of revealing what is already contained in the surface rather than creating an image ex nihilo.

The richness of the textures, the depth of the colors, and the effects of translucency constitute the signature of his work today. His abstraction does not seek to represent reality but to evoke a sensory experience, inviting the viewer to construct their own reading of the work. Titles hold an essential place in his approach: they extend the meaning of the composition and fully participate in the dialogue between verbal and visual language.

Since the 2010s, Ronan Martin has benefited from growing recognition on the contemporary art scene. His work is exhibited in France as well as internationally and is featured in numerous private collections. He is notably certified by the I-CAC (Institute for the Rating of Certified Artists), where he is listed among the referenced French contemporary artists. His works have been presented at several international art events, including Art Basel (2018, 2019), Art Miami (2019), FIAC Paris (2018 and 2021), Affordable Art Fair Brussels (2021), Discovery Art Fair Frankfurt (2021), Scope Miami (2021), as well as ArtExpo New York (2021). This international presence testifies to the interest in his work by collectors, galleries, and institutions sensitive to a creation where material, light, pigments, resin, abstraction, minimalism, and technical innovation converge in an exacting aesthetic and conceptual research.
