Presentation

Jean Clerté works in series. His sequential narratives reflect both a youthful spontaneity and fluency in the distribution of form and image on the painted surface. The narration is not only the accumulation of fragments and symbols juxtaposed to form a whole, it takes and gives meaning.

In general, we could say that Clerté practices an "eco-art" that feeds on raw appetites: the feeling of being welded to nature, vegetable, mineral, water. In his colorful paintings, his ink, his boxes, his objects, like a shaman on the path of his dreams, Clerté rises to the assault of wild beasts and demons, elves and gnomes.

From Poitou’s marshes to tropical forests emerge wildlife caught in the intricacies of a design that marvels at the emergence of these grotesque idols.
