Denis Ribas

Born in 1954 in Perpignan, Denis Ribas is a French contemporary painter of Catalan origin whose work is deeply rooted in the representation of nature, Mediterranean landscapes, and the light of southern France. Regarded as one of the few artists who still practice plein air painting exclusively, he has developed over several decades a personal pictorial language at the crossroads of Impressionism, Fauvism, and contemporary Expressionism.

From an early age, Denis Ribas was introduced to the beauty of natural spaces by his father, a writer and mountain enthusiast. He discovered painting during several years of study at the Fine Arts School of Perpignan under the guidance of painter Germain Bonnel. He nevertheless abandoned this path to dedicate himself to high level athletics, becoming vice champion of France in the 4 × 400 metre relay in 1978. This experience forged the discipline, rigor, and intensity that continue to define his artistic practice today.

Returning to painting after several years devoted to other professional activities, Denis Ribas adopted a radical approach. He paints exclusively outdoors, directly in front of his subject, without preparatory sketches or studio reworking. Working on linen canvases prepared by hand, he completes each painting in a single session, favouring pure colours and spontaneous gestures. This method places him among the contemporary heirs of the great masters of landscape painting while affirming a profoundly singular artistic language.

His visual universe is marked by the landscapes of Provence, the Catalan territories around Céret, the Alpilles, olive groves, vineyards, sunflower fields, and Mediterranean skies. Although his work has often been compared to that of Vincent van Gogh because of the power of his brushwork, the intensity of his colours, and his attachment to similar territories, Denis Ribas also acknowledges the influence of Fauvism, Maurice de Vlaminck, Georges Braque during his Fauvist period, and an expressionist sensitivity in which emotion prevails over descriptive accuracy.

Through generous materiality, vigorous impasto, and strong contrasts, the artist seeks less to represent nature than to convey the spiritual force it exerts upon him. His twisted trees, luminous paths, moving skies, and vibrant landscapes become the vehicles of a sensitive and contemplative experience. Denis Ribas states that his painting carries no explicit message but arises from a fascination with what he describes as “this feeling of eternity" offered by the natural world.

His works have been presented in numerous exhibitions in France and internationally, particularly in China, where he has undertaken monumental projects and developed significant cultural collaborations. His work is now included in several private collections across Europe and Asia. Described by certain critics as a “writer of images," Denis Ribas continues to pursue a free and authentic artistic practice in which landscape painting, Mediterranean light, contemporary Expressionism, and the Fauvist legacy come together to celebrate the timeless power of nature.
