Description
The graphic facade of the Thonik Building draws directly from the Mexcellent typeface created for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In "Zig Zag", selected for Artsper's Inspired by Mondrian collection, Mario Tarantino uses this striking geometry as his canvas, exploring repetition, rhythm and movement through his distinctive architectural photography.
Through a deliberate slowing of his camera's shutter, a person climbing the staircase becomes a blur of motion, bringing a moment of movement and fluidity to the rigid and repetitive.
The artist's development process deepens the contrast between the building's strong vertical lines, whilst further emphasizing the visual tension of the staircase as it zig-zags across the image, the result a contemporary photograph both dynamic and visually arresting, yet carefully balanced.
Printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm 100% cotton paper, acid and lignin-free, its smooth matte finish producing rich blacks, bright whites and delicate mid-tones with remarkable clarity and depth, making it the artist's material of choice.
Before leaving the studio, each print is meticulously inspected by Mario, then named, numbered and hand-signed. Part of an edition of only 20, it is accompanied by a signed and stamped certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
Mario Tarantino's distinctive contemporary photography is expressed through his use of negative space, minimalist compositions, and striking contrasts. His relentless pursuit of the surreal allows him to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating captivating visuals that offer moments of aesthetic escapism. Working primarily in monochrome, his images are bold yet balanced, creating a visual language that has earned him numerous international awards, including multiple recognitions as Photographer of the Year.
Exhibited in cities such as Tokyo, Budapest, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Athens, his work has reached a global audience while also becoming part of both corporate and private collections worldwide. His artistic vision resonates strongly with photography collectors who seek not only technical excellence but the ability of an image to linger, to suggest, and to evoke.
His artistic perspective unfolds across three main genres—architecture, landscape, and street photography each approached in a purist manner, using minimal elements in seeking to capture the sublime through simplicity. Much of his work is created under low light conditions, where the soft illumination gives rise to evocative imagery with a futuristic atmosphere that has become his hallmark.
His fascination with the interplay of light and shadow, texture, tone, and form is reflected in every piece, revealing his profound love of aesthetic photography. Mario uses his camera as a painter does a brush, not only to capture an image but to convey an idea, an inner vision or share their unique sense of beauty.
