Since the mid-1990s, Alexandra Duprez has developed an intuitive practice of drawing and painting rooted in art brut and folk art. Her work opens onto a dreamlike, phantasmagorical world inhabited by unsettling creatures, interwoven forms and proliferating eyes, hovering between figuration and abstraction.
The human body is central to her work: a body that doubles, dissolves and transforms into a being in perpetual mutation, half-animal and half-plant. Building up her surfaces layer by layer, through addition and overpainting, she creates what she calls "shreds of images", fragments of an ever-reinvented story with sprawling ramifications. The eye loses its way as if in a metaphorical forest grown from the artist's unconscious, while her recurring motifs lead into the uncanny world of her inner theatre.
Born in Quimper in 1974, Alexandra Duprez has long lived and worked in Douarnenez, and has devoted herself to painting since 1995. Her work is represented by galleries including COA (Canada), HAGD and Hagd Contemporary (Denmark), DYS (Belgium), Pulp Gallery (USA), Suzanne Albrecht (Berlin) and Moving Gallery (Netherlands). In 2015 she co-founded Galerie Plein-Jour in Douarnenez, which she continues to co-direct. She also collaborates with the publishers Esperluète (Belgium) and Chose Commune (France).
