Biography

Nicolas Deconinck is a Belgian painter whose work is in the field of contemporary painting, narrative figuration, and poetic realism. A graduate of the École de Recherche Graphique (ERG) in Brussels, he has been developing a singular body of work since the early 2000s where daily life, the intimate, and urban landscapes become the starting point for a reflection on memory, time, and perception. His pictorial universe is distinguished by a great mastery of drawing, a subtle palette, and a particular attention to light, which lend his compositions a silent and contemplative atmosphere.

Nicolas Deconinck works mainly in oil on canvas, favoring a slow and meticulous painting where every detail contributes to the construction of an open narrative. His works represent interiors, architectures, landscapes, human figures, and ordinary scenes transformed by the artist's gaze. Without seeking a photographic reproduction of reality, he constructs images where the precision of the motif dialogues with an emotional and poetic dimension. The plays of shadow, reflections, perspectives, and light variations occupy an essential place in his plastic language, inviting the viewer to linger on suspended moments.

His work questions the relationships between presence and absence, visible and invisible, while giving particular importance to spaces of transition and the traces left by human activity. Influenced by the tradition of Flemish painting, but also by contemporary realism, Nicolas Deconinck develops a personal writing where composition, pictorial material, and light participate in a discreet narration, allowing for great freedom of interpretation.

The works of Nicolas Deconinck have been exhibited in numerous contemporary art galleries in Belgium, France, and several European countries, as well as at international fairs dedicated to contemporary art. They are now in various private and institutional collections. Through demanding and deeply sensitive painting, Nicolas Deconinck asserts a singular place within contemporary figurative painting, developing a universe where realism, light, architecture, landscape, oil on canvas, and emotion unite in a constant search for balance between observation and imagination.
