Astrid Styma creates highly realistic still lives, portraits and sculptural interventions that span references between painting techniques of renaissance Neo-Realism, Surrealism and Post-Digital works of the 21st Century.
Figures which are often isolated from any detailed references are arranged in front of gently illuminated backgrounds that remind of contemporary and digital surfaces in pastel-shaded tones. Through the repeated depiction of the same motifs, the works read as metaphors for complex interpersonal constellations. And with subtle references to architectural impossibilities, Styma invites us into trustworthy worlds of images that reveal paradoxes and open up possible trapdoors of perception.
