Presentation

Michael Craig-Martin was born in 1941 in the United States. He studied Fine Arts at the Yale School of Architecture. He finds himself very inspired by the multi-disciplinary experiments and minimalist color theories of Josef Albers. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1966 and began to exhibit works there in galleries. He is particularly well known for his work "An Oak Tree" which consists of displaying a glass on a shelf accompanied by an insert explaining why it is an oak. In his works, he used more and more everyday objects, then began to draw and paint these objects in the 70s. From the 90s, he devoted himself more and more to painting but kept his style so recognizable. Simple shapes and vivid colors applied in solids, on paper or on walls.
