He lived much of his life in Argentina, where he was one of the founders of the MADI movement.
The Madi movement is a geometric abstract art movement founded in 1946 in Buenos Aires by Carmelo Arden-Quin. The aim of the Madi movement is to push the formal boundaries of abstraction in a playful and libertarian approach. Many contemporary art critics would like to reduce the Madi movement to its purely historical and South American dimension. Madi was indeed born in Argentina just after the end of World War II, and one might be tempted to see it as an interlude confined to the South American continent, but that would be too simplistic. Madi is much more than a movement situated between the spiritualist Russian avant-garde of Malevich and the grand American abstraction of Stella. For Madi has survived all the disputes, both the person of its founder and the passage of time. And in this first part of the 21st century, a third and even a fourth generation of young Madi artists continue to create.
