Okinawa-born artist redefining where art can exist

Biography

Uehara is an artist born in Okinawa in 1982. He completed his MFA in Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts. Rooted in themes of his native Okinawa, psychiatric institutions, and life on the streets, he creates and presents works in unconventional public spaces such as housing complex walls, underpasses, shopping arcades, and abandoned schools. Seeking to move beyond the confines of museums and galleries, his practice explores artistic expression within everyday living environments. Since 2011, he has worked part-time as an art staff member at Fukuroda Psychiatric Hospital in Ibaraki Prefecture, where he has also served as director of the hospital's annual Art Festival since 2013.
