Biography
Alexis Mata, born in 1981 in Mexico City, is a multidisciplinary Mexican artist who resides and works in his hometown. His artistic journey began with interventions in urban spaces, leading him to explore various mediums such as collage, drawing, painting, installation, and digital art.
Mata is known for his ability to disassemble and manipulate existing images to extract deep emotional resonance. Through his works, he explores themes such as death, violence, beauty, and the built environment. His recent work focuses particularly on communication systems, using non-figurative structures inspired by the Rorschach test technique to generate plastic forms in search of answers.
In December 2024, he participated in the "Fata Morgana" exhibition at The Hole gallery in Tribeca, New York, alongside sculptor Raul De Lara. This exhibition combined seven new oil paintings by Mata with seven sculptures by De Lara, exploring the notion of a complex mirage visible just above the horizon.
Among his other notable exhibitions are "Anamorphic Portraiture" at Mirus Gallery in Denver, Colorado, and "Reset" at Maia Contemporary in Mexico City. His work was also featured in the group exhibition "Vessel: Three Viewpoints from Contemporary Mexico" in June 2017, highlighting the diversity of Mexico’s contemporary art scene.
Mata’s works are characterized by glitch and pixelation effects, creating desert landscapes and still lifes that seem to blend or stretch across the canvas, offering a visual experience that is both disorienting and captivating.
His work has been featured in publications such as Two Coats of Paint, Colossal, and JUXTAPOZ, reflecting his growing recognition on the international art scene.
