
Biography
Yto Barrada is a Franco-Moroccan multimedia artist. Born in Paris in 1971, Barrada currently splits her time between Tangier and New York. Barrada completed studies at the Sorbonne, Paris and the International Center of Photography, New York.
Barrada is renowned for her photography however, she consistently works across a variety of media including film, textiles and sculpture. She frequently explores migration, identity and social issues in Morocco through her work, challenging traditional Moroccan narratives.
Barrada's works have been exhibited in several notable institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art.
In 2006, Barrada co-founded the Cinémathèque de Tanger - an independent cinema in Tangier aiming to promote film culture and provide a platform for local and international filmmakers. In 2011, she received the award for Deutsche Bank Artist of the Year.
