Biography

Born in 1976 in Fez in Morocco, the contemporary artist Ahmed Bennani is a self-taught photographer. Consistently receptive to criticism, today he produces entirely unique artwork, imbued with aestheticism, emotion and conviction.

He creates artwork in three dimensions: body, time and space. His photographs examine humans’ role in society, between heaven and hell, freedom and slavery, light and dark.

Beneath sensual, thin veils, we can make out the shapes of female bodies, without ever seeing any faces. Ahmed Bennani asks questions about women and their freedom, focusing on the veil which confines them. In the darkness, circles of light make bodies appear. We recognise the curves of human bodies through the contrasting colours and textures, although tone-on-tone compositions are common.

The artist gently expresses his ideas on paper, guided by a feeling of sensitivity.
