Sakhile Cebekhulu and his freedom of expression are representative of South Africa's refreshing creative spirit.
A 2014 graduate of the University of Johannesburg, he combines his two passions, fashion and art, in works inspired by hybridity, tribalism and afro-futurism.
His series Isintu sang'kholwa, Tradition Forgot Me, is about his generation's uprooting from tradition confronted with life in the city of Johannesburg. The red embroidery evokes traditional Zulu scarification, a sign of belonging to a clan and the passage to adulthood, and symbolizes the intangible link between the artist and his ancestral origins.
