JOSE VIAS GRANADOS

He began to take the first vital and pictorial steps in Cabrils, where at the age of eight he began his technical apprenticeship with the local painters Fontanills and Calzado. The Mataró Art Workshop, linked to the Barcelona School of Arts and Crafts (Palco), is his first encounter with the academic aspect of artistic training, a fact that will continue with attendance at numerous seminars. But it will be his self-taught tendency that will define a style marked by a good part of the North American referents of the 1940s and 1950s, especially those of abstract expressionism.
