Biography

For Ugandan artist Godwin Champs, his strikingly expressive portraits allow him to question conceptualisations of Black identity alongside wider portrayals of race and individualism. Champs earned his BFA in 2017 from Kyambogo University in Kampala, although he credits a large part of his skill to being self-taught. His first solo exhibition at Gallery Steinsland Berlin in Stockholm in 2019 was the start of a hugely successful international career, with subsequent shows in London, New York, Paris, Los Angeles and Brussels.
