Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a British painter and writer born in London in 1977, of Ghanaian descent. She is now considered one of the leading figures in contemporary international figurative painting , renowned for her imaginative portraits of Black figures, often timeless and devoid of explicit narrative. Her work explores representation, pictorial fiction, and the power of the gaze within the tradition of revisited classical portraiture .

She studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, then at Falmouth College of Art where she obtained her undergraduate degree in 2000. She then pursued a master's degree at the Royal Academy Schools in London, graduating in 2003. This solid academic training in contemporary painting structures her artistic language based on oil on canvas , gesture and the atmospheric construction of figures.

From the very beginning of her career, she distinguished herself with works that rejected direct narrative: her characters, often alone or in groups, seemed to exist outside of time and space. She drew inspiration from literature, jazz, memory, and also from the history of Western art, particularly the masters of portrait painting. This approach allowed her to create scenes open to interpretation, where the identity of the subjects remained deliberately undefined.

Her work quickly gained international recognition with major exhibitions in institutions such as the Serpentine Gallery (London), the New Museum (New York), the Kunsthalle Basel, and Tate Britain. She also participated in prestigious biennials such as the Venice Biennale.

Among her distinctions, she has received several important awards, including the Future Generation Art Prize (2012), the Carnegie Prize (2018), as well as prestigious nominations such as the Turner Prize (2013).

Her work, often associated with a revival of contemporary figurative painting, is characterized by a subtle palette, refined compositions, and a strong emotional charge. She is also a writer, publishing poetry and texts, thus reinforcing the literary and conceptual dimension of her artistic practice.
