Robert Barry

Robert Barry is an American artist born in New York 1936 and representative of the conceptual art. He made his studies of art at Hunter College and the City University of New York.

He participated since 1960 to the main exhibition of conceptual art in the company of artists such as Joseph Kosuth or is it better than Kawara.

His works consist of facilities or performance. He was interested in the physical phenomena, electromagnetic fields, the inert gases, the electromagnetic frequencies of ultrasound (Inert Gas Series, 1969).

In 1969, he organized an exhibition which is to close the gallery for the duration of the exposure in order to show that art is not something that can be taught between the walls, but that it is something invisible.

In its work, the participation of the spectator is a constituent element of his work. This are somehow the attitudes of spectators who take shape around the words chosen by the artist making the universality of this form of language respondent.
