Biography
Shawn Huckins, born in 1984, is an American painter celebrated for his unique blend of classical painting techniques and contemporary pop culture references. His highly detailed works reimagine 18th and 19th-century American portraiture by overlaying them with modern text, slang, or social media vernacular, provoking a visual and conceptual clash between historical tradition and today's fast-paced digital language. His iconic series such as The American Revolution Revolution and The American ___tier examine themes of American identity, social media culture, language evolution, and political commentary.
Originally from New Hampshire, Huckins earned his Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts in 2006 from Keene State College, also attending the University of Wollongong in Australia. He currently lives and works in the rural Monadnock region of southwestern New Hampshire.
Huckins has held numerous solo exhibitions, including Zippers Short and Skinny at Richard Heller Gallery (Santa Monica, 2024), If I'm Home, Find Me Here at Modernism Inc. (San Francisco, 2023), and Dirty Laundry at Duran Mashaal Gallery (Montreal, 2022). He has also taken part in major group shows, such as High Voltage III at the Nassima Landau Art Foundation (Tel Aviv).
He is represented by prestigious galleries including Duran Mashaal Gallery (Montreal), Modernism Inc. (San Francisco), and K Contemporary (Denver). His work is featured in several prominent public and private collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Tucson Museum of Art, and the Vicki Myhren Gallery at the University of Denver.
Shawn Huckins has received several grants and fellowships from institutions such as The Haven Foundation (Maine), Artists' Fellowship Inc. (New York), Colorado Creative Industries, and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. His art has been widely featured in leading publications including Forbes, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Huffington Post, New American Paintings, and The Jealous Curator.
